Our Year in Review: 2014

This was another exciting and rewarding year for the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum. We received some prestigious awards, celebrated our 5th anniversary, and retained our rating as the #1 Fairbanks visitor attraction on TripAdvisor. In February we were awarded the AACA Plaque for Outstanding Achievement in the Preservation of Automotive History by the Antique Automobile Association of America. We are honored that the AACA recognized not just our commitment to preserve and exhibit antique vehicles, but also the effort we have dedicated to researching, archiving, and sharing automotive history--including through this blog.

Other notable highlights from 2014 include:
  • We updated our display of large-format photographs featuring scenes from Alaska's early motoring days and produced a printed guide to the museum's photo exhibit.
  • We opened a new exhibit titled Extreme Motoring: Alaska's First Automobiles and Their Daring Drivers. This display about the first autos in the Territory and the hardships faced by their drivers was featured in Alaska Air Magazine, the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, Museums Alaska newsletter, ClassicCars.com, PrincessLodges.com, and several television and radio channels.
  • Due to high interest and positive feedback, we continued our "Beauty and the Bird" feathered hat exhibit. We also added several new fashion displays to the galleries.
  • In June we hosted the 3rd biennial Alaska Midnight Sun Cruise-In at Wedgewood Resort. Despite rainy weather, we had excellent participation from car owners from around the state, a dry cruise to the Salmon Bake, and a good audience turnout for the car show before the skies opened that afternoon.
  • Several new acquisitions were added to our collection, including a 1905 Franklin and 1910 Kelsey. We stabilized our 1915 Mack truck and put it on display outside the museum. Our docents constructed a replica of the first car to win an organized race in Alaska, a Ford Model T racer.
  • Record rainfall in Fairbanks prevented us from exercising many of the museum cars, but we did manage to get several out on the road, even during December. We showed our 1911 Ford Model T depot hack and 1932 Chrysler at the annual Vernon L. Nash Antique Car Club of Alaska show and drove our 1919 Pierce-Arrow in the annual Golden Days Parade.
  • We entered our 1917 Owen-Magnetic in the Pacific Northwest Concours d'Elegance in Tacoma in September. We were pleased to take home the Best in Class trophy in the Antiques class. Congratulations to Al and Paul Murray for their fine work on this unique car.
  • We produced a new coloring book about Alaska automobile pioneer Bobby Sheldon. The book was illustrated by Fairbanks artist Sandy Jamieson and authored by our historian, Nancy DeWitt.
  • Brad Dietrich joined our team as a mechanic, providing much-needed assistance to manager Willy Vinton. As always, we had fantastic help from our dedicated group of docents.
  • We rescued the remains of the original Fageol safety coach that was used by the Mt. McKinley Transportation Company in what is now Denali National Park.
  • Staff represented the museum as several events, including the National Association of Automobile Museums annual conference in Los Angeles, Scottsdale Auction Week, Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance, Bakersfield and Hershey swap meets, and Museums Alaska Conference in Seward.
  • We expanded the selection of items in the museum gift shop, including vintage-inspired jewelry, retro hats, and new t-shirt designs.
  • Our book, Alaska's Fountainhead Collection: Vintage Treads and Threads, was updated for a second printing and will go on sale in 2015.
Thank you for another great year!

Classic Cars to Shine at the 2014 Alaska Midnight Sun Cruise-In

by Nancy DeWitt

Fairbanks puts on a fantastic Solstice celebration every summer, but Alaska's hottest car show only rolls around every two years. Don't miss it this June!

Corvettes, Cobras, Thunderbirds and hot rods will be heating up the streets during the 2014 Midnight Sun Cruise-In on June 20 & 21. Those out enjoying Fairbanks’ longest days can expect to see an eclectic mix of classic cars rumbling throughout the city. They'll be cruising through downtown Fairbanks on Friday evening and then gathering at Pioneer Park for dinner at the Salmon Bake. Saturday afternoon is the Tour de Fairbanks, where the cars will cruise out the Steese Highway and through the Goldstream Valley, University of Alaska campus, and downtown Fairbanks.

The highlight of the Cruise-In is the Midnight Sun Car Show, organized by the Vernon Nash Antique Auto Club of Fairbanks. Held on the expansive grounds of Wedgewood Resort, the June 21 show is expected to attract close to 200 pre-1985 cars ranging from Model Ts and Studebakers to Mustangs and El Caminos.

Admission to view the cars is free, and the crowd will choose the winners among several classes:
  • Hot Rods/Modified (2014 featured class)
  • Pre-war Fords (2014 featured class)
  • Muscle Cars (owner definition)
  • Vintage (1949 and older)
  • Baby Boomer Classic (1950-1972)
  • Millennial Classic (1973-1989)
  • Miscellaneous (tractors, military vehicles, motorcycles, etc.)

Show-goers can also enjoy free hayrides, watch an antique steam car demonstration, see a 100-year-old electric car in action, and peruse the eye-popping collection of historic automobiles and fashions inside the museum. The awards banquet for the show takes place in the Fountainhead Auto Museum Saturday evening and is open to the public (advanced tickets required).

One fun new event will take place during the car show: Valve Cover Car Races! It's similar to pinewood derby racing, but you make a racer from a valve cover from an internal combustion car engine. Anyone, no matter how young or old, can play and there is no fee to enter unless you'd like to rent a car. For more information about valve cover cars and the race rules, see pages 6-7 of the car club's newsletter here. You can also check out Fairbanks's inaugural valve cover races at the club's annual show at the Carlson Center May 31 - June 1.

The Cruise-In will stage at Wedgewood Resort, the host hotel for the event. They are offering a smokin' hot room rate at Bear Lodge for the weekend at just $99/night. Call 1-800-528-4916 and use code CRUIS14 to make your reservation. Rooms fill fast for Solstice weekend, so don't delay!

A registration form for the Cruise-In, car show, and awards banquet can be downloaded here.

Special thanks to Seekins Ford-Lincoln for sponsoring our People's Choice awards this year, and to Ronn Murray Photography for the use of his fantastic photos!

Midnight Sun Car Show

by Nancy DeWitt

Although we call our big biennial event the Midnight Sun Cruise-In, the mid-day sun stole the show in Fairbanks on June 23. What a glorious day for a car show! The beautiful grounds at Wedgewood Resort made for a perfect venue to display and admire the vehicles, and for their owners to set up chairs and tents on the lawns. Many thanks to all who brought cars, especially those traveling here from Anchorage, Wasilla and other points south.

Despite what we consider a hot day for Fairbanks (82ยบ F), thousands of people turned out to see the cars, ride in the hay wagon and see our steam and electric car demos. Alas, the Stanley Steamer didn't cooperate but the electric cars were a hit. Perhaps the biggest draw of all was Fred Keller & Judy Foster's Radio Flyer wagon-car, pictured here as they headed out on one of two tours during the Cruise-In.

The People's Choice Award winners were:
Best 1950s - 1955 Cadillac Coupe DeVille (Cindy Helms). Runner up - 1955 Plymouth Belvedere (Scott & Linda Grundy)
Best Vintage - 1936 Packard 120B Coupe (Rod & Birgit Benson). Runner-up - 1930 Willy-Knight 66B (Scott & Donna Culbertson)
Best Classic - 1961 Chevy Impala (Chad Young). Runner-up - 1973 Dodge Challenger (Bret & Cindy Helms)
Best Hot Rod - 1934 Ford Cabriolet (Al & Ruth Haynes). Runner-up - 1949 Buick Super (K.B. Bettisworth)
Best Misc - Radio Flyer Wagon (Fred Keller & Judy Foster). Runner-up - 1942 Dodge W-53 Carryall (Cary & Ruth Meier)
Best Motorcycle - 1979 Harley-Davidson Chopper (Brent Helms). Runner-up - 1977 Honda CB75OF (Art Casserberg & Marijo Beaird)

If we had given out a "Best Rumbledog" award, this one would have gotten my vote. Kudos to the Vernon L. Nash Antique Car Club for putting on such a fine show, and for all the docents who helped with the scavenger hunt and record-breaking crowd inside the museum that day.
